After an introduction to the history of Vindolanda site, the historian Anthony R. Birley and the archaeologist Andrew Birley have illustrated the new findings from the latest excavations in 2017. Among structures and military equipment, new ink tablets have been come to light: the until now deciphered tablets feature letters, various in content but all belonging to the period 1 of the fort, when Iulius Verecundus was prefect of cohors I Tungrorum. Lastly, a cavalry barrack of period 4 likely occupied by the equites Vardulli, has also been identified, with further writing-tablets not yet deciphered.
